ICBPS- The US military on Thursday has carried out an airstrike targeting the Islamic Republic-backed-militias in Syria.
The US ait attack struck a site in Syria used by two Islamic Republic-backed militia groups in response to rocket attacks on American forces in the region in the past two weeks.
The strike destroyed “multiple facilities located at a border control point used by a number of Tehran-backed militant groups”, the Pentagon says.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the strikes took place “at President Biden’s direction” and were authorized not just to respond to the recent attacks against American and coalition forces but also to deal with “ongoing threats to those personnel.”
“Specifically, the strikes destroyed multiple facilities located at a border control point used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah and Kata’ib Sayyid al Shuhada,” Kirby said. “The operation sends an unambiguous message; President Biden will act to protect American coalition personnel. At the same time, we have acted in a deliberate manner that aims to de-escalate the overall situation in both Eastern Syria and Iraq.”
The decision to target the site in Syria was made from the “top down,” a defense official said.
It was the first military action ordered by the Biden administration since he took office and came in response to attacks against US and coalition personnel in Iraq – which led to the death of dozens of militants.
A civilian contractor was reportedly killed in a rocket attack by the Islamic Republic’s proxies on US targets this month.
